First Tattoo? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Your friendly guide from Silver Ghost Tattoo in Old Strathcona, Edmonton

So, you're thinking about getting your first tattoo—exciting! Whether it’s a tiny symbol or a larger piece with deep meaning, getting tattooed is a big step, and we know it can feel a little intimidating if you’ve never done it before. At Silver Ghost Tattoo, we’re here to make your first tattoo experience smooth, safe, and genuinely enjoyable.

Located in the heart of Old Strathcona at 10422 81 Avenue—just steps away from the University of Alberta—we offer both custom tattoos and walk-in services. Our diverse team of artists welcomes everyone, from tattoo veterans to first-timers, and we’re always happy to guide you through the process.

🧭 Step 1: Think About What You Want

Before you book, take some time to think about:

  • Size – Are you starting small or going big right away?
  • Placement – Do you want your tattoo to be visible or easy to cover up?
  • Style – Are you drawn to fine line, realism, illustrative, traditional, ornamental, or something totally unique?

It’s okay if you’re not sure—we love helping people refine their ideas!

🧑‍🎨 Step 2: Choose the Right Artist

Finding the right artist is key. At Silver Ghost Tattoo, we have a talented and friendly team ready to help bring your idea to life:

  • Chris B – Specialises in Japanese irezumi and American traditional, great for bold, timeless pieces.
  • Sly – Our resident walk-in artist, blending realism and illustrative styles with creative flair.
  • JD – A junior artist passionate about American traditional tattoos with clean lines and vibrant style.
  • Alan – Focuses on black and grey realism, perfect for detailed, moody designs that feel alive.
  • Amber – Creates beautiful ornamental, geometric, and illustrative pieces that flow with the body.

Not sure who to pick? Just reach out—we’re happy to match you with the artist whose style fits your vision.

📅 Step 3: Book Your Consultation or Walk In

We offer custom appointments for clients looking to plan and collaborate, and we also welcome walk-ins if you’re feeling spontaneous. A consultation helps you:

  • Talk through your idea with your artist
  • Get an estimate for pricing and time
  • Ask questions about the process
  • Discuss any concerns you might have

💡 Step 4: Know What to Expect on Tattoo Day

Here’s how to prepare:

  • Eat a solid meal beforehand—don’t show up hungry!
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or drugs (they thin your blood)
  • Wear comfy clothes that make it easy to access the area being tattooed
  • Bring ID—you must be at least 18

During your session:

  • You’ll get a stencil to review before anything begins
  • Your artist will explain the process and check in with you as they work
  • You’re welcome to bring headphones, snacks, or a support buddy for longer sessions

🧴 Step 5: Aftercare is Everything

After your tattoo, your artist will walk you through aftercare. Generally, you’ll want to:

  • Keep the area clean and moisturised with fragrance-free products
  • Avoid soaking it (no swimming or hot tubs!) for at least 2 weeks
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight while it heals
  • Don’t pick or scratch—let it heal naturally

Proper aftercare helps your tattoo heal beautifully and keeps it looking sharp for years to come.

Getting your first tattoo is a big milestone—and at Silver Ghost Tattoo, we’re honoured to be a part of it. We’re here to answer your questions, calm your nerves, and deliver a piece of art you’ll be proud to wear forever.
